Modern Apprenticeships (MA)
What Are Modern Apprenticeships?
Modern Apprenticeships give anyone over the age of 16 in Scotland the opportunity to gain experience in a paid role whilst also earning a recognised qualification.
First developed in 1994, Modern Apprenticeships have helped to build a robust training system in Scotland, which has, in turn, helped to create a skilled workforce. The Modern Apprenticeship frameworks are developed by employers, employer groups, and stakeholders involved in the delivery of each role. This hands-on development ensures that Modern Apprentices learn the skills, knowledge, and competencies directly relevant to their industry.
Modern Apprenticeships Library
Instructus Skills is the authorising body for multiple Modern Apprenticeship frameworks. These frameworks set out the skills and competencies of each apprenticeship, providing an outline view of the behaviours expected of a fully trained apprentice.
We frequently review these frameworks to ensure that they remain suitable for the roles and sectors in which they are deployed.
If you have any questions regarding these Modern Apprenticeship frameworks, please contact us.

Modern Apprenticeships are shaped by NOS (National Occupational Standards). These are detailed descriptions of the responsibilities and skills required by any given job role. Updating and maintaining NOS to ensure they remain relevant is a key part of our role - but we can only do this with your input.
We reach out to employers, professionals, and stakeholders from multiple sectors to get first-hand accounts of the role in practice. This enables us to define the core competencies and responsibilities for the role, as well as to identify any key trends, developments, and opportunities for progression. Our work ensures that the skills and competencies of employees remain relevant and defined.
Your voice is vital to this process. By contributing to NOS development consultations you can help to shape the future of skills in your industry.
